Specifications for building School house No 4 in Shelby Township Jefferson Co.

Size of house 20 by 36 to built of stone Foundation to be sunk twenty four inches under ground and raised sixteen inches above ground at at the highest point of ground.  The walls to be  Sixteen inches thick laid in good lime and Sand mortar. 

            The first joist to be two by twelve inches  Twenty inches apart to be stayed by two sets of bridging.  The room to be Twelve feet high between floor and ceiling  One door 1 ¾ inches thick four panel mould.  Door frame to be two by fourteen inches panel frame with transom  Window frames to be two by fourteen inches.  To be three windows on each side of the house all the frames box frames

            Eight panes of glass in each window 12 by 18 inches The window to be furnished with the necessary pulleys ropes and weights.  Glass to be fastened  in with putty Door frame window frames & Sash to be made of Seasoned pine  The floor to be one inch thick tongued and grooved together  Upper joist to be 2 by 8 inches Sixteen inches apart  Roof to be a ⅓ pitch rafters to be 2 by 5 inches to project fourteen inches over the wall to be neatly boxed Sheeting to be 1 inch thick & four inches wide to be covered with the best cut Shingle Showing not over four inches to the weather  Roof to extend 14 inches over the walls at the ends  To have a freeze board 14 inches to return 14 inches Stove flue to be built in the end of the house pipe to enter the wall nine feet above the floor

            Window frames to be ploughed on iner edge to to receive jams  Casing for door and windows to be 6 inches Cap boards over door and windows to be 6 inches at the ends and 8 inches in the middle.

Base board eight inches wide and one inch thick fastened to blocks of wood built in the wall  All the casing and base board to go on over the plastering  A strip of wood one inch thick & five inches wide to be fastened to door and window of casing on one side of the door to be furnished with twenty four hooks on the other side of the door a Shelf  Twelve inches wide supported by brackets. 

            The door and windows to have stone Caps and Sills A sawed Stone to be placed in the front gable with this inscription  Shelby Town ship Public School No 4 A D 1872 To be plastered with good lime and Sand mortar three coat work Plaster Paris finish

            The walls to receive a good Splash coat of  plastering on the out side  The door & frame window frames and Sash to be primed ? before they are put in  All the wood work to receive three good coats of white paint  The door and windows to be furnished with all locks and keys 

            All the material to be of good quality All the lumber to be thoroughly Seasoned All dirt and litter to put out of the house The whole job to be finished in a neat substantial and work man like manner on or before the 15th day of November 1872

            This indenture witnesseth that James Hankins agrees to build Said School house No. 4 according to the specifications to be completed in the time and manner specified for the sum of Nine hundred dollars ($900.) and that Shelby Township of Jefferson County and State of Indiana

does hereby agree to pay the Said James Hankins when the foresaid School house is completed according to the forgoing specifications  Five hundred dollars out of the Special School fund of Said Shebly Township the other four hundred dollars to be paid as soon as there Shall be money enough after paying Joel C Bishop and Joseph Jarvis The last mentioned four hundred dollars to draw six percent interest from the 15th day of Nov. 1872 until paid Witness our hands and seals the 6th day of August 1872

            Jan 18th 1873 House No. 4 not completed yet allowed School to commence the contractor agreeing to complete the house early in the next summer Gave Moses Buchanan a Township Note Calling for the Sum of $233 payable 15th of June 1874 to draw 6 percent interest from date Feb 5 1873 Gave James Hankins a Township Note calling for the Sume of $122. payable nine months after date 6 percent interest from date The above notes were given to the above parties for work on School House No 4

Specifications for enlarging School house No 12 in Shelby Township Jeff Co. Ind

            Take out the North wall. extend the East and West walls sixteen feet so that the house will be Thirty six feet long.  The new walls to be well and substantially joined to the old walls The new north wall and the new walls at the East and West to be same thickness As old wall build of stone laid in good lime and sand mortar 

            The room to be ten feet high between floor and ceiling  The door to be taken out and put in the middle of the South end  To be three windows on each side of the house and two in the front end all the windows to be the same Size as the windows now in the house all the frames and casing to be the Same Size and Style as are in the house 

            The bottom joist to be the Same Size as joist now in the house and placed the Same distance apart and placed the Same way of the house as old joist new joist to be Substantially bridged in the center. The old roof to be taken off the new roof to be a self Supporting roof to be according to drawing which is made a part of these specifications  The upper joist to be the Same Size as joist now in the house  The upper joist to be placed Sixteen inches apart the bottom of joist to drop one inch below Spanning timbers  The roof to have a third pitch the rafters to be two by four inches. to project over the walls ten inches to be neatly boxed  Also a ten inch projection at the gable with a neat box finish to have a neat moulding at the eves and gable  All the Sheetingto be good timber to be covered with the best

cut Shingles Showing not over four inches to the weather no nails in the roof to be exposed to the weather  The foundation for new wall to be Sunk two feet under ground laid in good lime and Sand mortar  The door to have Stone Sill and cap

            Windows to have Stone Caps Flue to be built in the end of the house.  To be plastered with good lime and Sand mortar three coat work.  The end opposite the door to have a Plaster Paris finish

            The base board to be one inch thick and eight inches wide  To have a freeze twelve inches wide and return twelve inches Flooring to be one inch thick tongued and grooved together to be thoroughly Seasoned Base board and casing to go on over plastering 

            The wall to receive a good Splash Coat of lime and Sand mortar on the outside Door and frame window frames sash casing and finish around eves and gables to be primed & receive two good coats of white paint Contractor is allowed to use everything that is in the house that will be of any value

            This Indenture made and concluded this 26th day of August 1872 by and between Shelby Township Jefferson County in the State of Indiana by Wm Mathews Township Trustee of Said Township party of the first part and John B Short as principal and and Joseph Hall as Surety parties of the Second Part Witnesseth

            That the Said Shelby Township of Jefferson County party of the first part in consideration of the covenants and againist of the parties of the Second part herein after written promise to pay to the Said John B Short out of the Special School

fund of Said Township the following sum of money to wit Six Hundred and Forty five dollars ($645) on the 10th day of June A.D. 1878 to draw Six per cent interest from the 15th day of November 1872 The Township reserves the right of paying this at any time before it is due

           In consideration of the Said Sum of Six hundred and forty five dollars the said John B Short of the Said County does by these presents covenant and agree to and with the Said party of the first part that he the Said John B Short last aforesaid Shall and will enlarge School house No 12 in Said Township and Furnish all the material to build the Same

            The Said School house to be entirely and completed in all respect on or before the 20th day of November 1872 according to the plans and specifications And further in consideration of promise  of the parties of the Second part the Said John B Short as principal and Joseph Hall as Surety are by these present held and firmly bound unto the Said parts of the first part in the final Sum of One thousand dollars ($1,000) to the payment of which we firmly find ourselves our heirs executors and administration firmly by these presents jointly and severally

            Sealed and Signed the day and year aforesaid Now if the Said John B Short Shall in all things and truly perform his covenants  and agreement to and with the party of the first part contained in these presents then and in that case this bond shall be null and void
