CANAAN SCHOOL #7 - 1927 Page 287 Specifications for a School House at Canaan Jefferson County Indiana Building to of brick, Size of building thirty eight by fifty five feet. The foundation to be sunk three feet under ground and raised eighteen inchs above ground at the highest point of ground Foundation to be twenty inches thick faced on both sides. Foundation for tower to be sunk three feet under ground and raised same as main foundation Center foundation running lengthwise through the building to be sunk sixteen inches under ground and raised Same hight as outside foundation to sixteen inches thick Water table of sawed stone seven inches thick to belt the entire building including lower to project one inch past foundation. The walls of first story to be sixteen inches thick, the second story to be twelve inches thick Each story to be thirteen feet high in clear First story of tower to be sixteen inches thick thick and same high as first Story of building Second Story of tower twelve inches thick and Same hight as second story of building The walls of tower from top of first story to be twelve inches thick. Size of ten feet by ten feet. Tower to extend four feet further out than wall of building The first section of tower to run eleven feet above top of roof to the coping of sawed stone belling the tower second section of tower to be eight feet high to the Stone Cap Two open windows on each side of second section of tower windows to have circle heads to be finished according to working drawing The foundation and walls to be laid in good lime and sand mortar. The house to have Sawed Stone Sills and caps to all the outside openings except front door which shall have a cut Stone Sill To have Stone steps leading to front door The building to have four stove flues two on each side of building to extend six feet above roof A Sawed Stone Sixteen inches by three feet placed in the front gable of the building with this inscription cut on it (Shelby Township High School erected 1872) The building to be plastered with Page 288 good lime and sand mortar thru coat work Plaster Paris finish. The first tier of joist to be two inches thick and twelve inches broad to be placed sixteen inches apart from center to center Second tier of joist to be two by fourteen inches placed Sixteen inches a part from center to center resting in the middle on a timber places length wise through the building. Said timber to be ten inches Thick by twelve inches wide The said timber to be supported by three iron collumns resting on the middle foundation.. The third tier of joist to be two by six inches placed length wise of the building sixteen inches apart from center to center Lookouts to be framed in joist projecting over the wall two feed to be two by eight inches place sixteen inches apart from center to center to be cut according to working drawing to be planked and tined to form gutter Freeze boards to be thirty inches wide to return thirty inchs Rafters to be two by five inches to be places Sixteen inches apart from center to center The roof to be framed according to drawing (A) three timbers seven by nine inches spanning the building to have six preformed? rafters seven by nine inches to be frame and bolted together according to drawing (A). The Sheeting to be one inch thick and four inches wide Roof to be of the best cut shingle showing not over four inches to the weather The first and Second Section of bell tower to be decked and tined. tin to be fastened to blocks of wood built in the wall to have pipe to carry water out of tower to roof of building Third tier of joist in tower to be two by twelve inches placed sixteen inches apart from center to center Fourth tier of joist in tower to be two by six inches places sixteen inches apart from center to center. To be a hatchway three feet square in third and fourth tier of joist Also a plain stairway running to top of tower The Cornish to belt the entire building to be according to drawing (B) To be twenty nine windows to have eight lights fourteen by seventy two Page 289 inches except window over front door which is to be a double window. All the windows to have box frames. Sash to be one and three fourth inches thick. The windows to be placed in building according to drawing. The front door to be in two fold each fold to be thirty inches wide one and three fourth inches thck raised and moulded on both sides Transom over door in two fold Door opening into main room on first floor to be same Size as front door four panel moulded on both sides transom in two fold Two doors opening out of tower into recitation rooms to be in one fold four panel moulded on both sides One door opening out of each recitation room into main School room Three doors in second story. One from each recitation room into main room and one from main room into tower The three last mentioned doors to be one fold four panel moulded on both sides Transoms over two fold doors in two folds transoms over one fold doors in one fold The door frames to be of two inch lumber panel frame and moulded Door frames to extend one inch past wall so as to receive plastering Height of doors to correspond with hight of windows The finish of door and window frames to be according to drawing (D F & G) The stairs to be four feet wide seven inches rise twelve inch tred to be of ash lumber The steps to be housed wedged and glued into wall String The null post – to be turned. eight inches at the base to be of sufficient hight to receive hand rail Hand rail to be two and one fourth inches thick by four inches wide finished in good Style Hand rail to run from null post up Stairway and return back over heading of Stairs Banisters for Stairs to be turned two and one fourth inches at the base tapering to the top. Banisters to be of oak wood All the rooms on the first story to be wainscoted from floor to bottom windows to be tongued and grooved together to put on over the plastering. The upper room to have a base board eight inches wide with a three inch base mould on top The flooring to be clear poplar lumber well seasoned tongued and grooved together All the doors And windows to have stout lintals The jam of windows Page 290 to flair three inches and extend inside of wall to receive plastering All the windows to have folding blinds in four pieces The joist to have two sets of bridging to each tier. Each of the large room to have a raised platform six by eight feet and eight inches high The joist to be arranged as not to enter the wall opposite The flues. One recitation room on each floor to be furnished with three dozen hooks for hanging hats and cloaks The same rooms to have Shelves for baskets The casing for doors and windows to according to drawing or to be more definite to be the Same as The Casing of the windows in the upper room of the Masonic building in Canaan The windows to be furnished with all necessary ropes and pulley and weights for raising lowerin or holding the windows at any desired hight. The doors and windows to be finished with all the necessary hinges latchs and bolts All the lumber to be thoroughly seasoned The brick to be burnt very hard.
