            Specifications for repairing School house No 10 on Brushy Fork creek, in Shelby Township , Jefferson County , Indiana

            The side walls to be taken down over the  windows. to the top of the opening, to be rebuilt with good Stone, lime & sand mortar, with new cap stoned the whole to made Sound & Substantial. Sleepers to be 2 by 8 inches, 16 inches apart. Floor to be one inch Thick. Tongued & grooved of Sound clear poplar, well Seasoned.

            Upper joists to be 2 by 6 inches. 16 inches from center to center. to extend 6 inches over the wall on each side. the ends to be boxed and finished in a plain, neat and Substantial Style.  Gable ends of roof to extend project over the walls 8 inches. to be finished in good plain style. Roof to be made Same pitch as before of good Shaved Shingles. Showing not over 4½ inches to the weather on 16 inch Shingles. 

            Flue to be build in middle of the house, of brick. of Sufficient Size to admit a Six inch pipe. to be supported by iron hooks fastened to the joists, So that the bottom bricks may come down even with the ceiling.  The joists on which flue rests to be well stayed to prevent settling. Door frame to be 2½ inches thick by 14 inches wide.

            Door to be made of good clear pine 1⅜ inches thick.  4 panels flat & beveled hung with good 3 inch hinges. & finished with lock & key.  Window frames to be 2 inches thick. by 8 inches wide, to be ploughed to receive slats for Sash. & also ploughed on inner edge to receive casing. 7 inches wide & one inch thick. to extend from window frame to inside of wall.  Sash to be made of good clear pine 1⅜ inches thick, to be primed before receiving glass, which is

to be fastened in with tins & putty.  Each window to have 2 spring Snaps, to hold the Sash at any required height/ The old plastering to be removed & walls to be replastered good 3 coat work. 

            The wall in the end opposite the door, to receive a coat of Shim, mixed with Plaster of Paris for blackboard to extend across the room & to the windows on each Side.  2 ft. 6 inches above the floor & 3 ft. below the ceiling.  Casing for inside of door & windows to be 6 inches wide and one inch thick. Cap boards over door & windows to be 6 inches wide at the end & 8 inches in middle. 1¼ inches thick.  Base board 8 in. wide & one in. Thick.

            Door, frame, window frames & base board to be fastened to blocks of wood driven firmly into the wall & Strip of board 5 inches wide to be fastened to door casing and to window casing on each side of door. extending along the wall, to be furnished with 18 hooks on each side for holding caps, bonnets, Shawls & c. Seats & desks of Rankins patent to accommodate 40 pupils, also 2 low Seats 7 ft. long, made with backs

            Vinetian Shutters for windows, painted green, with bolts to fasten on inside. Door & frame, Window Sash & frame, casing, base board Gable ends boxing under eaves & c. to receive 2 good coats of white paint.  Desks to be varnish stained, Lumber for finish, casing boxing, seats & desks to be thoroughly Seasoned & clear. The whole to be completed in a substantial & work man like manner on or before the first day of September 1870.

            This Indenture witnesseth that J. C. Bishop agrees to repair Said School house No. 10 according to the foregoing Specifications to be completed in the time and manner specified, for the Sum of Three hundred and ninety five dollars, and that E.P. Niles, Trustee of Shelby Township to hereby

agree to pay to the said J. C. Bishop when the afore said  School house is completed in accordance with the foregoing Specifications.  Three hundred and ninety five dollars, of the Special School funds of said Township.

          Witness our hand the 23rd day of April, 1870.

Specifications for repairing Schoolhouse No. 2 near Center Grove Church , in Shelby Township Jefferson County Indiana.

            The East end wall to be taken down.  Side walls to be made six feet longer so that 4 ft. & 8 inches well be added to the length of the room.  New walls to be 16 inches thick built of Stone well laid in lime & sand mortar.  the side walls to be well and substantially joined to the old wall.

            Also a wall to be built through the middle of the house from end to end to support the middle of the floor. to be permanently laid in lime & sand mortar.  The foundation of outside walls, to be laid 2 ft below the natural surface of the ground. Inside wall 15 inches below Lower joists 2 by 8 inches,16 inches apart Floor to be of sound clear lumber 1 inch thick, well seasoned, to be tongued and grooved. 

            Upper joists, 2 by 6 inches, 16 inches from center to project 6 inches over the walls on each side. ends to be boxed and finished in a neat plain & substantialstyle.  Rafters 2 by 4 inches 14 ft. long.  Roof to made of good Sound Shingles.  Showing not over 4 inches to the weather  on 16 inch shingles.  Gable ends to project 8 inches over the walls, to be finished in good plain Style.

            Flue to be built of brick, laid in good lime & sand mortar, to be of Sufficient Size to admit 6 inch pipe, to be supported by iron hooks fastened to the joists, so that the lower bricks may come down even with lower side of joists.  The joists on which flue rests to be well stayed to the rafters to prevent Settling. 

            Door to be made of clear pine, 1⅜ inches thick 4 panels flat & beveled.  hung with 3 inch hinges & furnished with lock & key.  Base boards 8 inches wide & 1 inch thick to be fastened to blocks of wood driven into the wall, to be put on after the walls are plastered. 

            A strip of board 5 inches wide & inch thick fastened to blocks driven in the wall, to extend from door casing to window casing, on each side of door. 4½ ft. from the floor, to be supplied with 18 hooks on each  side, for caps, bonnets, & c.  Also a shelf 9 inches wide & placed over the above mentioned strip, to be supported by brackets.

            New wall to be well plastered with lime & sand mortar. good 3 coat work.  Old plastering to be removed below the windows on each side, to a straight line that will make the plastering all sound.  Also old plastering to  be removed from old blackboard, to a Straight line 6 inches above old painting to be well & substantially replastered.  the skim on the blackboard to be mixed withPlaster of Paris so that a good, smooth, hard finish may be secured.  All new plastering to be well joined to the old.

            Venetian Shutters for the windows, painted green, furnished with bolts to fasten on inside.  Door 7 frame, window sash & frames, baseboard, casing, front of shelf Brackets & strip, Gable ends, and boxing under eaves to receive two good coats of white paint.  The new wall to receive a good splash coat of mortar on outside.  The whole to be finished in a good substantial & work man like manner, to be completed on or before the 15th day of October 1870.

The Indenture witnesseth that Joseph R. Jarvis and Jonathan Kinnett agree to repair said School house No 2. according

to the foregoing specifications, to be completed in the time and manner specified for the sum of Three hundred and twenty five dollars, and that E.P. Niles Trustee of Shelby Township agrees to pay to the said Jarvis & Kinnett when the aforesaid School house is completed in accordance with the foregoing specifications.  Three hundred and twenty five dollars of the Special School Funds of said Township Witness our hands this 10th day of June 1870.

We the undersigned hereby agree to make the following additions to School house No. 2, over & above the specifications in the contract entered into by us, June 10th 1870. to wit:       The side walls to be made 16 inches longer than specified in the said contract.  So that 6 ft may be added to the length of the room.  The walls all to be raised 10 inches higher than before.  One window on each side places in the new wall 3 ft from the corners.  Same size as old windows to be furnished with Venetian shutters.  Window frames to be ploughed to receive slats for sash, to be made same thickness & width of others. Door frame with transom above door, 2 inches thick & 14 in. wide.  New walls to be plastered & new wood work to be painted as was specified in first contract, the whole to be finished in the same manner & time as therein specified for the sum of Sixty five dollars.
