1865 Plan and Specifications of School House No 6 in Shelby Township Size 22 by 30 feet Foundation to be dug out and laid under ground below the natural Surface of the Earth 22 inches.  First joist on Sleepers to be 2 by 10 inches to rest 10 inches above the natural Surface of the Earth 22 inches apart To be Supported in the middle by a Stone wall lain permanently. 

            The wall to be made of Stone lime and Sand 16 inches thick.  One Door in the End opposite the Road.  Size of Shutter 3 by 7 feet Four Pannels flat and beveled 1 3/8 inches thick made of good clean pine.  Five Windows Three on Each Side 12 panes of Glass in Each. Size of 10 by 15 inches.  Size of Frames for Door and windows 2 ½  in thick & 14 inches wide Window Frames to be Ploughed to receive Slats for  Sash Each Window to have a cut Stone cap & Sill and also the door. 

            Sash to be made of good clear pine 1 3/8 inches thick to be primed before receiving Glass.  Glass to fastened in with putty.  Each Window to have two Spring Snaps by the use of which the Sash may be raised or lowered at pleasure.  Floor 1 ¼ inches thick to be Tongued and grooved. 

            Highth of Story 10 feet between floor and ceiling when finished The Stove flue to built in the wall in the End oposite the Door.  The Stove pipe to Enter the flue 2 feet below the ceiling The top of the flue above the roof to be finished with Bricks  Size of flue, 6 by 8 inches inside upper joist 2 by 8 inches Set 16 inches apart to jut Over the wall on both Sides 6 inches to be boxed and finished in a plain neat and Substancial manner.  The Gable ends of the roof to jut over 6 inches

to be finished in good plane StyleA good Shingle roof 7/24 pitch not Showing more than 4 inches of Shingle to the wether (this is on 15 inch Shingle)

            Plastering to be done good three coad work (That is 2 coats of Mortar and a Skim)

The finish inside.  Base boards 8 inches wide Caseing for Door & windows.  Siding 6 inches wide 1 inch thick Caps 6 inches wide at Ends & 8 inches in the middle 1 ¼ inches thick with lap board & brest board for windows

            Lock & Key for Door   Windows Shutters 2 for Each window four pannels Frames 1 3/8 inches thick with good fastenings Seats & Desks of James Rankins Pattent to accommodate Thirty Schollars Low Bench Seats to accommodate 20 Small Schollars Desks & Seats to be Varnish Stained  Sash Frames Door Finish and furniture with the finished inside Outside to be painted white. 

            The Shutters to be painted a Stone color The Stone wall in the End over the Door To receive an oblong Square Block of hewn or Sawed Stone with the following inscription cut in Legible English letters And figures (there on (towit) School No 6. Shelby Township 1865 The Stone wall Outside to receive a No 1 good Splash coat of Plaster The corners to be made with cut Stone

            In Short the House is to be finished in good work man like manner and Style For a School House All of the work to be done with good materials lumber for Door Sash Frames Shutters finish floor Desks & Seats are to be thoroughly Seasoned and clear also a Number of hooks to be hand the Stove Pipe

In the line that begins with “Each window” the words “four Fannels Frames” have a line drawn through them. The line that begins with “inside Outside” the word “inside” had a line drawn through it.

I J. C. Bishop Agree to build and Complete School House No 6 in Shelby Township as per Plan and Specifications as laid down By Trustee above in the time And manner Specified In Consideration of the Sum of Nine Hundred Dollars. 

            And I  Gamaliel T Warfield agree to Employ the Said J. C. Bishop to build and complete the Said School House for which I gree to Pay the Said Bishop the Sum of Nine Hundred Dollars of Special School Funds if there is Enough Funds on hand when completed And the remainder on or before the first day of June 1866 In witness where of we hereto Subscribe our names this the 25th day of September 1865

There is a pink and white stamp located above 1866. It has a picture of George Washington on it and the number 5 in each corner.  At the top it reads “Inter Revenue” and at the bottom it reads “INL u Exchange”. C.B initials  and 1865 appear on the stamp
